Understanding Your Skin Concerns

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TREATMENTS ....

Skin concerns vary from person to person, but common issues include fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, acne, scarring, rosacea, dehydration and loss of elasticity. Effective skin treatments are based on understanding individual skin needs and selecting appropriate, evidence-based solutions.  Skin is incredibly diverse, varying in type, colour, texture and thickness based on genetics, ethnicity and environmental factors. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right skin care, makeup and treatments for suitable skin health. Skin colour is determined by melanin, produced by melanocytes.

The Fitzpatrick Skin Scale is a clinical classification system used to categorise skin types based on how the skin responds to UV (sun) exposure — particularly how easily it burns or tans.

It was developed by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick and is widely used in dermatology and aesthetic medicine to guide treatment selection, laser settings, and risk assessment (e.g. pigmentation risk).

The 6 Fitzpatrick Skin Types

Type I
Very fair skin
Always burns, never tans

Type II
Fair skin
Usually burns, tans minimally

Type III
Medium skin
May burn, gradually tans

Type IV
Olive skin
Rarely burns, tans easily

Type V
Brown skin
Very rarely burns, tans easily

Type VI
Dark brown to black skin
Almost never burns

Another interesting factor about skin is its thickness and texture : Ethnicity palys a role in skin thickness, oil production and ageing patterns. - this all helps tailor skincare treatments.
